Field note / 01

Reproduce before you reason.

For your own technical practice environment, begin with a small observation you can repeat. These notes describe a general working method, not a walkthrough for a particular task.

Write down the starting conditions

Record the software version, inputs, and expected behavior. A surprising result means more when the starting conditions are known.

Reduce the example

Remove one irrelevant piece at a time. Keep the original example alongside the smaller one so that you can compare them.

Separate observation from explanation

“The process stopped after this input” is an observation. A proposed cause is a hypothesis until another experiment distinguishes it from alternatives.

Leave a useful stopping point

Record the result, the remaining uncertainty, and the next question. See note-taking for long tasks.
